How to Search Civil Dockets
Superior Court civil matters start with the official Washington Courts Case Search or the Odyssey Portal. Odyssey Smart Search takes a record number or a party name. You can narrow results by several fields. These include location, file date, category, case type, status, attorney, judicial officer, and others. The state form searches by party or business name, case number, court, case type, and filing year.
District Court civil and small-claims cases use the District/Municipal branch instead. Results can include a case summary, future appearances, and detailed docket activity. The online result may lack the filing you need. In that case, go through the clerk's counter, phone, or written record request. County Clerk public computers and the Washington State Archives also provide Superior Court images. The District Court Clerk handles requests for its own files.
- Identify Superior Court, District Court, or small claims from the claim and existing case papers.
- Select Chelan County and the correct civil case type in the official search.
- Enter the exact case number, or search a party or business name with a filing year.
- Match the court, file date, parties, status, and case type before reading activities.
- Request the named signed order, judgment, pleading, or certified copy from the responsible clerk.
Chelan Civil Docket Court Boundary
Chelan County District Court takes civil claims up to $100,000, not counting interest, costs, and attorney fees. Exceptions exist in its published jurisdiction. Title or possession of real property, certain tort claims, and some estate matters fall outside it. Anything above the cap, or outside District Court authority, belongs on the Superior Court docket when that court has jurisdiction.
Quick answer: the $100,000 figure is a jurisdiction ceiling, not a filing fee or a prediction of the award in a Chelan County civil case.
Whichever court you pick controls the docket portal, clerk, request form, and fee schedule. Check the court level before assuming a record is missing.
What a Civil Docket Shows
A Chelan County civil docket usually opens with a few standard items. These are a complaint or petition, a fee entry, service or return, and an answer. From there it can run through a counterclaim, scheduling event, motion, order, mediation, trial, settlement, judgment, garnishment, writ, satisfaction, and closure. Probate, guardianship, domestic, and parentage cases use their own vocabulary. One caution: a filing label only proves the item was entered. It does not prove the legal claim won.
| Case number | The stable identifier used by the portal and clerk request form. |
|---|---|
| Case type and location | Superior, District, small claims, domestic, probate, or another category. |
| Parties and roles | Plaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent, plus public attorney fields. |
| Filings and events | Dated complaint, service, answer, motion, order, or other activity labels. |
| Hearings | Date, time, courtroom, judicial officer, type, and status when available. |
| Outcome | Settlement, dismissal, judgment, satisfaction, disposition, and case status in context. |
An Odyssey document marker does not guarantee a free public download. Access depends on the county, the record category, and your user role.
Chelan Civil Docket Filing Sequence
Read the civil register as a timeline. The complaint states the claim. Service records delivery of process. An answer replies to the complaint, and a counterclaim asserts a claim back against another party. A motion asks the court to act, and the order that follows shows what the judge decided on that request.
Docket flow: Complaint or Petition › Service › Answer › Motion › Hearing or Trial › Order or Judgment › Satisfaction or Closure
Case status, disposition, and satisfaction mean three different things. Status describes the broad current state. Disposition records how all or part of a matter ended, while satisfaction usually records that a judgment obligation has been fulfilled. Read each label with its date, party, amount or scope when public, and the underlying signed record.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
The Chelan County civil docket holds more than ordinary lawsuits. Superior Court takes general civil actions beyond District Court authority. Its calendar also carries domestic matters, probate and guardianship, and adoption and parentage. Protection-related matters and other general-jurisdiction proceedings appear there too. District Court handles qualifying civil claims plus a separate small-claims track.
- Superior Court general civil actions
- District Court civil claims within its published authority
- Small claims seeking money only
- Domestic and family proceedings
- Probate and guardianship matters
- Protection-order and other restricted categories
Category shapes both terminology and access. Even a public case index keeps family, health, protected-address, and confidential-source documents closed.
Chelan Small Claims Docket Limits
Chelan County District Court calls small claims a money-only process capped at $5,000. No equitable remedy is available. That means no court order forcing someone to act or stop acting rather than pay. The county also requires a real claimant to file. Attorney or limited-license legal technician participation needs judicial approval.
A small-claims docket may list claimant and defendant roles, the money-claim label, service, hearing, judgment, payment, and satisfaction. There is no special small-claims portal. Use the District/Municipal state search or ask the District Court Clerk about a record request. Don't guess at search fields.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
A civil setting can surface in several places. Try Odyssey's Events and Hearings tab, Search Hearings, the county calendar, or the limited-court case view. Check the date, time, location, courtroom, judicial officer, proceeding type, status, and any remote or in-person note. A hearing-search result is only a scheduling aid. It is not the signed order proving what the court decided.
Chelan County says the Superior calendar can be posted by 4 p.m. on the prior court day. It can still change after posting. A continuance moves a setting, and a struck setting comes off the calendar. Neither entry, by itself, ends the civil case. Confirm any time-sensitive appearance with the clerk, especially if two public systems disagree.

Know what you are asking for before you contact the clerk. An index only tells you a case exists. A docket lists the public activity in order, entry by entry. A plain image of a filing is not the same as a certified copy. The clerk authenticates a certified copy as an official court record. So if you need a signed judgment or a dated order, name that exact item. Asking for "everything" costs more and slows things down. The Superior Court Clerk request page walks through the clerk review. It covers the State Archives route too. The rule that payment comes before copies appears there as well.

When Odyssey lists a Chelan County civil docket entry but leaves out the document you need, go to the clerk instead. A request filed with the clerk's office is the right fallback for that record.
Chelan Civil Docket Copy Fees
Copying costs in Chelan County depend on which court handles the record. Format matters too. District Court sets its fees at $5 for the first certified page. Each additional page costs $1. Electronic image pages run $0.25 each, and paper copies cost $0.50 per page. A CD goes for $20. Records searches are billed at $15 per hour once work passes the second hour. The Superior Court side lists its own per-page and certification rates. It sets separate terms for electronic delivery and CDs. Check the current figures before placing an order. The official District Court fee schedule spells out the amounts the court charges.

Every charge above covers searching for or copying a court record, not starting a case. The Superior Court Clerk civil fee schedule lists both filing and copy categories, so read the labels.

A Chelan County civil filing fee pays the court to process a new case. A copy fee pays to reproduce a record that already exists. Always read the item name before assuming an amount applies.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
Washington leans toward openness. General Rule 31 treats court records broadly as public. A court may restrict them only when law, a court order, privacy, safety, or undue burden requires it. Sealing and redaction follow General Rule 15. Family-law, protection-order, guardianship, therapeutic, health, and restricted-source files face extra limits under General Rule 22. Adoption records carry statutory confidentiality of their own.
The practical effect shows up in a Chelan County civil docket. You may see the docket entries while a filing itself stays withheld or redacted. Administrative county and city records are different. Those travel through the Public Records Act, a separate process from judicial records. So send a filed complaint, judgment, docket, or case record to the court clerk. Do not route it to a city clerk just because the city is a party.
Key rules:
Washington GR 31 defines the public court-record framework.
Washington GR 22 protects specified family, health, and confidential-source records.
RCW 26.33.330 limits access to adoption records.
